About Mighty Pines
In 2019, I (Sarah) found myself with a heart for homeschooling my little ones but no one to share it with. I yearned for a community of mothers and children who loved the Lord like the prosperous trees described in Psalm 1. After a chance neighborhood meeting, a blind date playdate from a mutual friend, and a social media post, I formed a group of Christian homeschooling families to meet at the park. Thus, the seed for Mighty Pines was planted!
Over the next few years, Mighty Pines quickly grew into multiple groups with over 50 families all with the same desire! I found that not only did we all enjoy sharing the load of home education, but we were encouraging each other as well! We shared books, ideas, resources, and time with each other-and soon that spread beyond homeschooling.
We became willing Christ servants, serving each other in neighborly love through illness, accidents, and losses. Our friendships with each other brought JOY and solidarity in motherhood and a chance to practice biblical hospitality. We became a reaffirming tribe that our jobs as mothers are IMPORTANT. In a world that screams that children are a burden, that staying at home and raising children is an unworthy calling, that serving ME is what will make happiness, we were encouraging each other that the servant work of raising children and loving our neighbors was truly fulfilling.
Our children were blossoming too! Their friends and community were affirming God’s truths. Their minds were able to feast on beautiful lessons, rich with literature, art, and science all while surrounded by nature. They enjoy hours of playing in God’s creation after formal lessons are finished for the day. Friendships are modeled after mother’s friendships-fueled by a love described in 1 Corinthians.
It isn’t perfect by any means (we are all born sinners) but a resounding thankfulness for this community became a constant theme. We still meet under the trees each Tuesday morning. Our hope now is that we can spread this kind of encouragement and plant other communities around the world. While each Mighty Pines weekly group meetings may be structured a bit differently, the same heart of equipping our children with a feast of knowledge & His truth are there. Best Book I’ve Read Recently: Christy by Catherine Marshall! Its such an encouraging book set in the early 1900s in the backwoods mountains of Tennessee. The story surrounds a school teacher who has left a life of comfort to teach children who are destitute and illiterate. It’s got a little of everything. Murder mystery, love interest, love of nature, and it’s also based on the true stories of the authors mother.
Something people would be surprised to know about you: I’m left handed!
What’s your guilty pleasure? Besides sneaking candy after the kids go to bed, I love a good TV show. Favorites: Friends, The Office, Big Bang Theory
Favorite part of homeschooling: Freedom and opportunities! I was previously a classroom teacher. I always carried guilt over the fact that I couldn’t cater to each student, and I felt very boxed in by having to follow curriculum that I didn’t enjoy. I love being with my family and growing and learning along side of them. We aren’t constrained by a bell schedule. We can go off on field trips and spend our days outdoors. We can learn from reading good books and by getting our hands dirty in nature!
Hardest part of homeschooling: Being a stay at home mom is a heavy weight. Being a stay at home HOMESCHOOLING mom is an extra heavy weight. There’s a lot of plates to balance (literally and figuratively), loud noises, constant interruptions, and endless tasks. I’m always fighting with myself over the ideal versus reality. I’m also a strong introvert and get touched out very easily. It’s very hard to find time enough time for myself, so that I can bring my best self to the day.
